A year ago, AI was something you went to a website to use. You opened ChatGPT or asked a question to a chatbot. It was a separate thing, a tool you picked up when you needed it.
That changed. AI is now baked into your phone, your email app, your search engine, your photo library, your word processor, and your bank's fraud detection system. Most of the time, you do not even know it is there.
Apple launched Apple Intelligence in late 2024. It runs on-device AI that can rewrite your emails, summarize notifications, generate images, and pull information from across your apps. It works on iPhone 15 Pro and newer, and it is on by default.
Google embedded Gemini into Android, Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and Search. When you search on Google now, you often get an AI-generated summary at the top of the results instead of just links. Gmail can draft replies for you. Google Photos can search your images by describing what you are looking for in plain English.
Samsung shipped Galaxy AI on its S24 line, with real-time translation during phone calls, AI-powered photo editing, and note summarization. Microsoft pushed Copilot into Windows 11, Office apps, and Edge. Even your keyboard app probably has AI suggestions now.
The point is: you did not opt into most of this. It arrived in software updates.
Most of the embedded AI falls into a few categories:
Summarization. Your phone summarizing a long email thread. Your browser summarizing a news article. Notifications getting condensed into a one-line summary instead of showing every message.
Generation. Drafting email replies, suggesting text messages, creating images from prompts, rewriting your writing in a different tone.
Search and retrieval. Finding a specific photo by describing it ("the picture of the dog at the beach from last summer"), searching your files and messages by concept rather than exact keywords.
Background processing. Fraud detection at your bank analyzing transaction patterns. Spam filters using AI to catch more sophisticated junk mail. Your phone's camera using AI to improve photo quality in real time.
This matters more than most people realize. Some AI features run entirely on your device. Apple made a big deal about this — many Apple Intelligence features process your data on your iPhone and nothing leaves the device. When they do need more computing power, they use what Apple calls "Private Cloud Compute," which processes your data in a secure environment that Apple says it cannot access.
Google's approach is more cloud-heavy. Many Gemini features send your data to Google's servers for processing. Google says it does not use your data to train its AI models, but your data does pass through their systems.
The difference matters if you care about privacy. On-device processing means your data stays on your phone. Cloud processing means it travels to a server somewhere, gets processed, and comes back. Both work. They have different privacy implications.
Here is what worries me about AI being everywhere: it creates new surfaces for things to go wrong.
When your email app auto-drafts a reply, it might include information you did not intend to share. I have seen AI suggestions that pulled in details from other email threads and included them in a draft to the wrong person. That is a privacy leak caused by a helpful feature.
AI-generated search summaries sometimes get facts wrong. If you search for "is this phone number a scam" and the AI summary gives you incorrect information, you might trust a number you should not. For phone numbers, I would recommend using a dedicated phone number checker rather than relying on a general search summary.
Notification summaries can miss important nuances. A summary of a message that says "we need to talk" might just show "conversation request" — losing the urgency or tone that would help you prioritize it correctly.
And there is the question of what happens when scammers learn to exploit these features. If a phishing email is designed to look good after AI summarization, the summary might strip out the red flags that would have been visible in the full text. Always look at the actual message when something feels off, and run suspicious messages through a checker if you are unsure.
AI being embedded in everything is not inherently good or bad. It is a shift in how software works, and like any shift, it has trade-offs. You get convenience, better spam filtering, faster photo search, and smarter notifications. You also get new privacy questions, new ways for things to go subtly wrong, and a layer of processing between you and your information that you did not ask for.
The best approach is the same one that works for most technology: use what helps you, turn off what does not, and stay aware of what is happening with your data. That is not exciting advice, but it is honest.
